Bren Burkevics
Executive Group Manager of Environment Heritage and Water and the Conservator of Flora and Fauna
Bren is a born and bred Canberran with much time spend stomping the wilds of the ACT. Having studied Resource and Environmental Science with a view to being a Ranger, Bren quickly realised there were far more academically committed people than he and diversified his studies to be somewhat of a buffet breakfast. During these university years, Bren started volunteering for the ACT State Emergency Service and subsequently the ACT Rural Fire Service. Bren has played a role in many disasters that have impacted on the ACT including the Thredbo Landslide, Canberra Hospital Implosion, the 2003 and 2020 bushfires and countless storm, flood and missing person events. Bren now volunteers for Lifeline. These experiences as a volunteer have honed Bren’s intrinsic focus on the importance of volunteering and what volunteers personally sacrifice for the good of the community. Bren recognises the important role that government plays in fostering and supporting volunteers. Bren is a career public servant having spent most of his time since 1999 with the ACT Government in a wide variety of operational, administrative and policy role. Bren is honoured to returned to the environmental sector and work with so many qualified and experienced staff and volunteer to confront head on the challenges and pressures that we see on the ACT’s biodiversity, environment, water, heritage and culture. Bren’s focus for the role of Executive Group Manager of Environment Heritage and Water and the Conservator of Flora and Fauna is to build a system for environmental management. This system is about aligning resources within a leadership and governance framework to deliver strategic plans. Bren recognises that it is a race against time for all biodiversity and environmental matters and works to cut through to ensure all resource are focuses on delivering tangible benefits
